Lineup For Week 13

Well this is it, the final week of our first league play!

We had a lot of action Tuesday evening, and at times it was quite noisy on the ice; a lot of close calls.  At the end of the evening the results were as follows:

Sheet 1:  Matt Cooney’s team defeated David Blamey’s Team in the consolation game.  This means that David’s team will “win” the first PCC Special trophy!!!

Sheet 2: Andy Philip’s team defeated Michel’s team in a decisive manner.  Congratulations to Andy and his team who are advancing to the Bronze Medal Game.

Sheet 3: Ann Wiggins’ team defeated Glen Foster’s team in a fairly close game. Congratulations to Ann and her team who are also advancing to the Bronze Medal Game.

Sheet 4:  Matt Sharkey’s team defeated Bill Marshall’s team in a “practice” game!  Be ready, next week’s for the South Carolina Title

So the lineup for week 13 (May 24) is as followed:

Sheet 2: The Gold Medal Game between Bill Marshall’s team and Mat Sharkey’s team.  The winner takes the Gold Medal and the PCC Champion Trophey.  The looser gets the Silver Medal.  Good luck to both teams!

Sheet 3: The Bronze Medal Game between Ann Wiggins’ team and Andy Philip’s team

Sheet 1 and sheet 4 is available for the other 4 teams to play against each other.  This is the 10th game for each team that all of us have paid for at the beginning of the season.  On Sheet 1 Glen Foster’s team could play against Matt Coney’s team and on sheet 4, David Blamey’s team could play against Michel’s team (Margot Shaffer will be the SKIP as Michel will be in France).  Please make sure that you will have enough players on your team to play; otherwise, please use the substitute list so that evryone can enjoy the last game, even if it is just for the pleasure of the game.

NOTE: Please remember that as per our rules, the Gold and Bronze medal games must have a winner (supplemental end).

Good curling to all of you!

South Carolina Curling Championship – Gold and Bronze Medal Games Set

SOUTH CAROLINA CURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

GOLD AND BRONZE MEDAL GAMES SET

GREENVILLE, SC, May 18, 2011 – Competition for the first Curling Championship in South Carolina’s history concludes next Tuesday, May 24th, at the Greenville County Recreation District’s Pavilion ice facility. The Championship, hosted by the Palmetto Curling Club, is comprised of two divisions of four teams who played an eight game preliminary round to determine the match-ups for next week’s medal games.

The Upstate Division, and an entry into the gold medal game, was won by Bill Marshall’s rink who narrowly edged out the team led by fellow Canadian Glenn Foster on the last stone of divisional play. Marshall, originally from New Glasgow, NS, commented “It was a really dramatic game. I don’t think Glenn or I ever imagined that two guys from Nova Scotia would be down in South Carolina battling it out to a final stone for a spot in a championship final. But it never ceases to amaze me how often curling does come down to that last rock. We had a great run in divisional play, but we still feel fortunate to make it through to the gold medal game.”

Marshall will face Palmetto Division winner, Matt Sharkey’s team who prevailed in the tight race for the divisional title. Sharkey, a former PGA Nationwide Tour player, said “We had a lot of close games with several of them ending in ties. We only had one loss though, but that was to Marshall. So, we are really happy to get an opportunity to play them again. The fact that it is for the State Championship makes it all the more exciting.”

Two other Palmetto Division teams made it through to the bronze medal match-up which will feature skips Andy Philip, from Trenton, Ontario, versus Anne Wiggins, a former US Senior Women’s National Champion and current resident of Hendersonville, NC

Curling is an ancient Scottish sport played on ice where each member of a four-person team “shoots” 42-pound granite stones across the ice toward a target. The team’s objective is to position as many of its stones closer to the target than its opponent’s nearest stone during each “end” to earn points. The winner is the team that has the most points at the game’s conclusion. Curling is a sport of honor, tradition, and integrity that requires both physical dexterity and complex decision-making. It made its official debut as a medal sport in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano Japan.

Similarly, Glenn Foster’s team remained undefeated last night and sits atop the Upstate Division. Foster, originally from Sydney, Nova Scotia, skips three teammates who all work for the Cliffs Communities. He commented about the parallels between curling and its more well known Scottish cousin: “My guys are around golf all the time, and it has been interesting to see how fast they have been able to translate some of the strategic decision-making needed in golf over to curling. We have been very successful so far.” Foster’s team is the only team in the Championship without a loss or tie.

The State Championship resumes next Tuesday, March 22, at 7:30 pm at the Greenville County Recreation District’s Pavilion Ice Facility. Admission is free for spectators, but there is a $10 fee for those wanting to participate in a Learn-to-Curl session on the Palmetto Curling Club’s extra sheet of ice.
