The Palmetto Curling Club had three teams compete in the 2nd Grits-n-Granite bonspiel hosted by the Charlotte Centre Curling Club. The teams competed Friday through Sunday (8/9 – 8/11) against teams from clubs all over the country and from Canada. The PCC team “Southern Comfort” won the D event championship for the first all-PCC team championship at a Bonspiel. The team was skipped by Daniel Fort, with Sherri Odlevak was his vice, Matthew Jones threw second, and Lisa Cobb was lead. All three PCC teams competed hard, had a lot of fun and represented the Palmetto Curling Club well.
“Southern Comfort” had disappointing first and second games losing each game narrowly which sent them into the D event. The team then won three consecutive elimination games to win the D event championship. They won the championship game 7-5 in seven ends. The team was down 5-2 through five ends but then scored two with the hammer in the sixth and stole 3 to close out the game in the seventh end.
“Sharkpocalypse” was skipped by Matt Sharkey, his vice was John Corcoran, second was Ryan Smith, and Kathy Corcoran was lead. They led off the event with a win against a team from Appleton Wisconsin to stay in the A event. They dropped to the C event after a loss against the Ottawa Canada family curling team the Sinclairs in the second round 11-3. In the first round game of the C event “Sharkpocalypse” won the match after the opposing skip narrowly missed with the hammer allowing “Sharkpocalypse” to steal 4 and win 9-8. The team lost the C event semifinal elimination game against a team from the Triangle Curling Club in Raleigh, NC
Team “Waffle House” was put together by Dave Delauder who was the vice, Lon Peper skipped the team. Brett Wilson was second and Grant Burrows led off. “Waffle House” lost their first game in the A event dropping them to the B event, where they won their first game in the B event bracket. Their third game of the bonspiel was a loss unfortunately which eliminated them from further brackets.
